In 1884 the infant Franklin Delano Roosevelt (above) wore a frilly dress, patent leather mary-janes and long hair. We’ve rediscovered Jeane Maglaty’s fascinating article published in the Smithsonian Mag (circa 2011) discussing nineteenth century children’s fashion, and recent gendering of children’s clothing in western culture.
